Debuting in 1990, the Mazda MX-5 Miata’s primary draw was that it was an affordable convertible that was actually good looking and fun to drive, not just cheap. To find out more about the Jimba Ittai, or “horse and rider becoming one,” design philosophy behind the new Mazda MX-5 Miata, read the following article.
Early 1990s Mazda Miatas
The two-seater Mazda Miata started at less than $14,000 and offered the Velcro-like handling of a much more expensive sports car. The car was incredibly small and lightweight compared to Mazda’s other cars and it came with a double wishbone suspension, which made it extremely nimble. The disc brakes and easily operable convertible top also made the Miata a breeze to drive.
Mazda Miatas of the Early 2000s
With the new design of the 1999 Miata was more modern, but it didn’t change the overall character or even the size of the original Mazda Miata. Though the Mazda Miata had always been famous for offering a short list of features, this year’s Miata could be equipped with upscale leather seating and a premium Bose sound system. To connect the driver and car even more, Mazda came out with the MazdaSpeed Miata, which offered an upgraded turbocharged engine as well as a sportier suspension and six-speed manual transmission.
Today’s Mazda Miatas
Staying true to its roots, the Mazda MX-5 Miata aims first and foremost to keep the driving experience engaging and uncomplicated. The new Miata’s windshield pillars and sun visors were moved to give the driver has the best view of the road, while the new Dynamic Stability Control that’s standard on the new Miata works to actively reduce understeer and oversteer during cornering.

Driving a safe car is good not only for ensuring that you are protected in the event a collision. Safe cars also produce a noticeable peace of mind when you’re driving down the road, passengers in tow, knowing that you’re in a reliable, safe Mazda. Read the following article to explore Mazda’s three primary safety credentials.
Crash Safety Awards
Due to their safety cage construction and generous airbag lineup, Mazda vehicles have a reputation for performing well on Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash safety tests. If you want to be behind the wheel of a car that does so well on IIHS crash safety tests that it wins the organization’s prestigious Top Safety Pick award, you’ll be happy to know that several Mazdas have earned it, including the Mazda CX-5 and Mazda3.
Outstanding Driver-Vehicle Communication
Mazda is committed to making the driving experience as straightforward and responsive as possible. This means improved performance—but it also means dramatically increased safety. New Mazdas are built with fewer blind spots, greater overall visibility, and strong brakes with electronic assistance technology.
Active Safety Technologies
If you’re behind the wheel of a new Mazda with state-of-the-art safety technology, you can be sure that your car will be your extra set of eyes to further reduce the chances of an accident. The Blind Spot Monitoring System, Lane Departure Warning System, and Front Obstruction Warning System are just a few of the optional features that Mazdas can be equipped with. These technologies and others will monitor the road and alert you—or even apply the brakes—to help prevent or reduce the damage in an accident.
